It happened at 3 a.m. during a storm, naturally. Power’s out, the generator kicks on, and forty minutes later it sputters and dies — because the tank was lower than my “quick look” with the dipstick had suggested. I’d eyeballed it that afternoon, thought we were fine, and went to bed. We weren’t fine. Capacitive probe (Gems Sensors and similar) — ~$100–250. Mea maitai a'e, but it drifts with fuel grade and heat, and calibration is fiddly.
Clamp-on “external” ultrasonic (the no-hole, stick-it-to-the-outside kind) — ~$200–400. Sounds magical. It isn’t, on my tanks. These need a perfect acoustic couple to a clean, Te mau nota, non-insulated wall. My generator tank is thick painted steel; readings jumped 20% between fills. I wasted a weekend and got garbage.
Ultrasonic with one drilled hole (the HojellyTek03GP route) — ~$80–150. Yeah, you have to put a hole in the tank. But it’s one hole, it’s stable, and there’s no float to jam.

Gems capacitive probe — ~$100–250. Solid if you babysit the calibration.
Full GPS + ultrasonic fleet kit (a telematics brand) — ~$300–600 per vehicle plus $15–30/month. Great if you manage fifty trucks; overkill for me.
I put HojellyTek03GP units on the genset and the two skids, and left cheap floats on the trailers just as a “not empty” tell. All-in for the good stuff stayed under $500.
Te mau mana'o tauturu no te: yeah, you drill a hole — budget for it
This is the part the brochures gloss over. The HojellyTek03GP needs an installation hole. On a steel tank that means drilling and welding a 1/2" NPT boss, then threading the probe in and sealing it. If you can weld, you’re in ~$30 of fittings. I can’t, so a mobile welder ran me ~$140. Plastic or aluminum tanks are a different dance — molded boss or saddle clamp, check compatibility first. Then there’s running the cable to a display or controller: another Saturday afternoon.
Total reality: DIY ~$50–80 beyond the sensor; outsourced ~$200–300. Compare that to the clamp-on “no-hole” unit I also bought — which sounded easier and ended up costing me a weekend of curse words and zero trustworthy data. The hole is the honest trade.

Here’s what actually sold my boss on it: fuel theft and slow drains. Equipment left on a site or in a yard at night is a sitting target, and a manual check the next morning tells you after the fuel’s gone. A level monitor that pushes an alert is your eyes when you’re not there.
I ran it past our insurer. Some fleet/commercial policies will at least credit you on the claims side for having a monitored, documented fuel trail — and a couple of brokers I talked to said theft-deterrent monitoring can nudge a premium down. Your mileage will vary, so ask. But the real “insurance” isn’t the paperwork — it’s catching a 2 a.m. drain instead of an empty tank at 7 a.m. The protection that matters most is the kind that works while you’re not there. That line is why I stopped arguing about the hole.
